Sustainable Memphis

Written by Ysmay.

The City of Memphis and Shelby County have joined forces in creating an Office of Sustainability. The definition used by the State of Oregon was adopted for this initiative: "Sustainability means using, developing, and protecting resources at a rate and in a manner that enables people to meet their current needs and also provides that future generations can meet their own needs. Sustainability requires simultaneously meeting environmental, economic, and community needs."

Intent on being accessible and providing information to the community, a Facebook Page has been created.

The City of Memphis currently has three recycling programs in place:

Curbside recycling for residents
5 Recycling drop-off centers
Yard waste recycling

Most standard materials are accepted, with the exception of plastics not marked 1 or 2.

The Memphis - Shelby County Hazardous Waste Collection Facility is operated to keep household hazardous wastes out of the landfill.

In a special initiative by Memphis Light, Gas and Water (MLGW) and the Tennessee Valley Authority, residents are able to purchase "green power" generated by solar, wind, and methane gas for $4 per block. This money funds new sustainable energy generating facilities.
