Denver Aurhor Kristi Helvig makes Sci-Fi Debut

Written by JKS Communications.

DENVER, Colo. – As Earth decays and what’s left of humanity struggles in turmoil, all 17-year-old Tora Reynolds wants to do escape, but making a smooth getaway proves more difficult than expected in Kristi Helvig’s “Burn Out” (April 8, 2014, Egmont USA).

Inspired by a mix of fiction and real science documentaries, Helvig explores what would happen to the world if the sun Kristi HelvigKristi Helvigsuddenly burned out way ahead of schedule. For “Burn Out’s” futuristic heroine, Tora, it means surviving on a barren planet without her family, forming unlikely alliances and learning who she can truly trust. As the planet perishes, fellow survivors become more hostile and the dystopian wasteland around Tora becomes increasingly dangerous.

“I love the aspect of the ‘science’ in science fiction,” says Helvig, who consulted with an astrophysics expert while writing her book. “Many things have come about that were once fictionalized ideas – robots, synthetic biology, crime software that predicts crimes before they occur. My book involves weapons and personal electronic devices being powered by the person’s own energy. Though I wrote the first draft of this book several years ago, I recently saw a news article that this technology is already being developed.”

A futuristic blend of Beth Revis’ “Across the Universe” and Lenore Appelhans’ “Level 2,” Kristi Helvig’s debut novel wets sci-fi fans appetites for a thrilling story of survival, action, suspense and a hose of devious characters.

Independent bookseller Alberta Jenn said of “Burn Out,” “If you loved the Hunger Games, add this book to your To-Read list! This series is going to be HOT!”

“‘Burn Out’ is full of heart-stopping action, tough choices, and hot boys, plus a dash of romance, and enough intrigue to keep you guessing and on the edge of your seat until the end,” one fan says in an online review. “There's nothing like it out there right now.”

Helvig is a clinical psychologist turned science fiction and fantasy author. She lives in Colorado with her husband and two children. There, she enjoys writing, yoga, hiking and wine tasting.
