History of Boston

Written by Ysmay.

Boston: 1743Boston: 1743

Named for Boston in Lincolnshire, England - hometown of some of the Puritans who immigrated to the area - Boston was permanently settled in 1630 by representatives of the Massachusetts Bay Company who were, for all intents and purposes, fed up with the Church of England and decided to plant themselves firmly on another continent.

The Massachusetts Bay Colony was a population founded almost entirely of Puritans who had little regard or tolerance for those with varied religious views; Baptists, Quakers, and Anglicans were excluded from taking part in the government of the colony.

The Algonquin-speaking Massachuset tribe native to the area gave the settlers little difficulty because, while they grew corn on harbor islands, their permanent homes were established further inland.
