College Life in Miami

on Monday, 06 May 2013. Posted in Miami

Miami is one of the most unique cities in the United States. Located in southern Florida, this ultra-large city sports gorgeous beaches, beautiful weather, a large cultural and arts centers, and Southern charm. Famous for its night life, tropical attitude and great Cuban coffee, Miami also boasts some of the most desirable colleges in the country.

A Day in the Life of a College Student

As typical with any college student, the time you decide to get up in the morning will be based on your class schedule. However, unlike other areas of the country, you can almost guarantee that you will be waking up to a beautiful sunny day. You may find taking a drive outside the city to site see, or up the coast for a very pleasurable drive very desirable. You will often find yourself on the local beaches or in the downtown area enjoying some of the best dance music and night clubs in the country.

Housing

Most students live on the campus of the college where they have chosen to go to get a degree. Others may still live at home and commute to a college due to the financial strains that most students will face during their first 4 years of study. Some who have moved to Miami specifically to go to college choose not to live on campus but pair up with some roommates to share in the cost of apartment living.

Transportation

Though Miami has a terrific transportation system that any student could take advantage of, you will find most drive to get to campus or around campus to get to class. The freedom that owning and driving a car gives the average young person will outweigh any desire to use public transportation.

Unfortunately, statistics show that many of the traffic accidents that happen nationally involve 24 years old and younger drivers, the most commonly found age group that attends college. According to autos(dot)com, here are some age statistics:

Teens - Highest Risk Group: "For every mile driven, teens between the ages of 16 and 19 are four times as likely to be involved in a car crash."

High Risk Age Groups: "People between the ages of 15 and 24 and over 75 are the groups most likely affected by car accidents."

If you drive, it is wise to be sure to have good insurance coverage. If you are involved or injured in a car accident, contacting a Miami car accident lawyer is important. They will inform you of your rights and fight for them if needed. They will be able to provide you with information about insurance companies and what your rights are.

According to the Insurance Research Counsel, car accident victims who hire a lawyer receive an average of 3 1/2 times more compensation than if they dealt with the insurance company by themselves. Most accident lawyers will provide a free initial consultation.

Colleges Throughout the Miami-Dade Area

The most famous college in Miami is the University of Miami. This top-rated university is home to the Hurricane’s athletic program. Aside from their winning athletic teams, the University of Miami offers full degrees in many subject matters, including medicine, teaching, and political science.

Miami is home to two different Catholic universities. Barry University specializes in education degrees, business and has a separate law school. St. Thomas University offers advanced degrees in medicine, mathematics, science and art. There are also many different colleges that specialize in a single industry or offer generalized degrees.

Employment Available after Graduation

Because of the vast size of the city of Miami-Dade, along with its importance in the shipping industry, import and export industry, and the large population in the area requiring different services, the potential for employment in Miami is strong.

Some of the different types of employment opportunities you may find in Miami include:

• Attorney

With two different universities offering law degrees in the area, and with the large population and industry found in this area, the need for an attorney is always great.

• Import/Export Businesses

If you are working towards a business, finance, marketing, or accounting degree you will find plenty of different positions available in Miami. Miami has one of the largest ports in the country, which works around the clock every day of the year.

• Medical Professions

Anyone receiving an education in medicine, at any level, will find that Miami has much to offer. A large population, especially retirees, always requires quality medical care.

With Miami having so much potential and positive lifestyle opportunities, anyone would find relocating or continued living there a great choice. With such a diversity of colleges and employment found in Miami, whatever your desired degree, chances are you will be able to find a university that offers a great program and work after graduation.

5 Awesome Places to Chow Down in Austin

on Friday, 03 May 2013. Posted in Austin

Whether you're moving to Austin or just going there for an event like SXSW, here are five great places to grab a bite to eat.

Uchi

People often say that Austin is its own little island within Texas. If someone is wondering what sets it apart from other Texas cities, Uchi is the perfect example. With its trendy decor and awe-inspiring food, this is a meal you won't forget.

Some of the menu items you'll want to consider are the Bacon Steakie, miso soup with mushrooms, machi cure, sashimi, hamachi nabe and spicy kim chee stew. Not only is their standard menu absolutely awesome, but they also do a really great happy hour during the week.

Turf N' Surf Po Boy

This restaurant actually started out as a food truck. Thanks to its huge success, the owners decided to put down roots and open a restaurant. But just because they're now in one location doesn't mean they've stopped being fun. Once you finish eating, you can enjoy a few rounds of giant Connect Four or skeeball. This great establishment offers po boy sandwiches with steak, catfish, bacon, blackened Mahi and more. They also complement their sandwiches with great condiments like creamy slaw sauce. Also, if you're around at night and in the mood to go out, their bar is always a popular destination.

Barley Swine

While all the options on this list are quite tasty, Barley Swine may be the most interesting. The place is a gastropub, so in addition to a bar that's filled with extensive wine and beer options, they also offer interesting dishes like poached cod with potato, leek and salt cod.

Franklin Barbecue

When someone like a Lancaster injury attorney visits Austin, this is the type of place where they can take a break from their normally stressful routine and enjoy themselves. Although the popularity of this restaurant means you may have to wait a while for your food, it’ll all be worth it when you're served delicious favorites like sausage, ribs, pulled pork or brisket, along with out-of-this-world potato salad.

Uchiko

If you're planning a meal to celebrate a special occasion, this is the place to go. While Uchiko is definitely on the pricier end of the spectrum, they don't disappoint. People have literally said they'd take a trip to Austin just to eat there!

What makes Uchiko so popular? In addition to the quality and variety of their food, they also provide truly excellent service. This includes their great sake bar. And once you've finished tasting everything from pork belly to brussel sprouts, you'll be able to end on a sweet note with fried milk and seasonal sorbet.

Mammoth SkiMammoth Ski

Crisp Snow and year-long sunshine are a winning combination at California's tallest ski resort, set amongst 3,500 acres of terrain for all ability levels. Mammoth Lakes Ski Resort has 150 named trails and a long winter season (November to June).

With 28 lifts, including high speed quads, six packs and gondolas, there is no obstacle to a Mammoth vacation. With prices starting from just 69 US dollars per day for a ski or ride pass (cheaper if booked in advance), this spectacular wintersports area is suited to pros, enthusiasts and families alike, making it one of the best ski resorts in the USA.

The deep, high quality snow found at Mammoth, coupled with its reputation as California's only "big mountain" skiing/riding experience, puts the massive factor into a vacation on its pristine slopes. The diversity of parks at Mammoth is another plus factor; children and professionals would be equally at home with the quality and range available. Serious riders will find a challenge at Unbound Main, a supreme snow park stocked with technical rails and supersized jumps.

Here you can mix with pros and learn to be more "steezy" on your board. The X-Course is the park to hone your speed skills. Rollers, jumps, berms and bumps are faced through multiple lines. This park also plays host to USASA-sanctioned events. At Forest Trail Park, the 15 perfectly proportioned jumps can lead you down towards South Park, with small gaps leading to rails and boxes. Many big names have practised here.

One highlight for those who like a challenge is the 22 foot pipe, at over 500 feet long. Practise in conditions comparable to the Olympics and X Games, amid the beauty of Mammoth Mountain. After a strenous day hitting the slopes a Scenic Gondola Ride will help you unwind, arriving at the summit of Mammoth to enjoy the 360 degree views of 400 miles of high altitude peaks.

Mammoth VillageMammoth Village\

The central hub of Mammoth is The Village, where retail shops, nightclubs and restaurants provide an apres-ski ambience. New this year is the Ski Back Trail, running for 7,800 feet, with an average width of 22 feet and ending up next to the Village itself. Complimentary hotel shuttles can help you explore all the activities around Mammoth Lakes, making sure you chillax to the max. For the younger guests, there are superb parks and ski/board school facilities on offer.

The Mammoth Ski and Snowboard School is one of the best nationwide and has 400 instructors. Children aged 3-6 years who are ready for the slopes can have Ski Lesson Combination packages, with childcare. A Performance Development Series, for intermediate and advanced skiers and riders lets you work with Mammoth's top pros in groups focused on the same skills and terrain. This starts from 539 US dollars for 10 weeks of lessons.

Children can enjoy themselves at the Disco Park, full of scaled-down features, such as jumps, boxes and a mini-pipe, all in one lap. With a great choice of fine lodging and opportunities for cross country skiing around the tree-lined trails of Mammoth's Scenic Lakes Basin, you will be on top of the world at Mammoth!

Take a Walk or Drive Down these Streets on your Next Trip to LA

Rodeo Drive by flickr user: InSapphoWeTrustRodeo Drive by flickr user: InSapphoWeTrust

LA is a great city to visit during any time of year. With warm, sunny summers and mild winters, you can’t go wrong with a trip to the nation’s second largest city. One of the best ways to explore during your visit is by traveling down some of SoCal’s most famous streets and city walks. Each has its own history and special characteristics, and will give you a taste of what LA is best known for.

Rodeo Drive

Located in the affluent Beverly Hills, this elegant three-block stretch is famous for tons of boutiques and shops. Here you’ll find flagship stores of some of the biggest designer labels. Even if you’re on a tight budget or not looking to buy anything new, it’s worth a stroll down this street just to look at the beautiful window displays, see some of the newest trends, and maybe even spot a celebrity or two.

Third Street Promenade

Essentially an open-air shopping mall, this major street in Santa Monica is packed with the nation’s major chain stores. If Rodeo Drive is a bit out of your price range, this is the perfect place to spend an afternoon. The long, palm tree-lined street is typically full of street performers, making this a fun place for tourists as well as an ideal shopping destination for locals.

Hollywood Walk of Fame

A classic SoCal landmark reminiscent of old Hollywood glamour, the Hollywood Walk of Fame features large star-shaped stones embedded in the sidewalks. The stars show the names of the most famous actors, directors, musical performers, and others who have “made it big.” Tourists come from all over to stroll down these sidewalks and see almost 2,500 names of people who have contributed their talent to Hollywood.

Mulholland Drive

This well-known road is featured in numerous movies, songs, and other bits of pop culture. It’s one of the top places to go for great views, not only of the scenic landscape, but of the beautiful homes of the rich and famous. A drive down this road through the Santa Monica Mountains is a fun way to get a glimpse of natural beauty and LA lifestyle.

Venice Beach Boardwalk

For a different kind of a street, take a trip to the boardwalk in Venice Beach. This eclectic beach neighborhood offers a funky combination of sea, sand, and shops. Stroll down the boardwalk to see performers, artists, and lots of specialty vendors. You can find everything from souvenirs to novelty gifts to unique eats. And don’t forget to pass by Muscle Beach, frequented by body builders who come specifically for their daily workout!

Successful Career Opportunities in Miami

By Lisa Coleman

Miami by John SpadeMiami by John Spade

Miami can only be described as unique. The city is a mixture of beach life, Caribbean charm, diverse cultures and Southern charm. It has near perfect weather all year long, and the city is “alive” around the clock. Miami is one of Florida’s largest cities and industrial complexes. It is also one of the most popular tourist destinations, with South Beach being famous worldwide.

Those who enjoy city life and all that goes along with it will find that they will instantly fall in love with Miami.

For those who are considering a move to this beautiful South Florida city will find that there are some very specific professions that are always in demand in Miami.

Maritime Law

Miami is one of the largest and most productive ports on the East Coast of the United States. Ships carrying cargo from Africa and South America generally land in Miami to unload. Maritime attorneys are specialists, such as Doyle Raizner maritime lawyers, that handle the laws associated with the sea. They specialize in maritime law regarding international waters, transportation issues and even handle dock work issues associated specifically with the boats that
enter the port. Maritime law is very different than laws that take place on land, and this type of attorney make a lucrative living by knowing and understanding the laws of the sea.

Entertainment

Miami has made a name for itself in music production. Many of the largest producers of new music now are headquartered in Miami. For those looking to enter into the entertainment business, there is probably no place better to get your start.

Cabinet Making

While this may seem like an unusual trade to mention, woodworking artisanry is a very large profession in the Miami area. Large companies from around the world have their cabinets created in Miami. Additionally, many local artisans have studios throughout the city to sell their one-of-a –kind designs.

Import/Export Business

Because of its prime location, people interested in importing or exporting goods to the Caribbean and South America find that Miami is the perfect place for their business. With the port easily accessible, importers and exporters make a very good living in Miami.

Tourism

There is a large variety of opportunities and positions available in the tourism industry in Miami. Translation services, life guards, classic chefs, even lounge singers will find that Miami is the perfect place to start or enhance their careers.

As a large city, Miami also has many educational institutions that you can attend to create or enhance a career. In fact, many people specifically come to Miami to attend school because of the diversity in the area. This multi-culturalism leads to many employment opportunities upon graduation.

If you consider all of the wonderful things about Miami, it is easy to overlook the possibility of a hurricane or tropical storm each year. Most people in the area are accustomed to this type of weather, and “transplants” to the area quickly adjust.

Get Inspired in Los Angeles

Here are Five Ways to get Inspired in Los Angeles

Runyon Canyon by PartyEarthRunyon Canyon by PartyEarth

No matter what your career or your age, inspiration is a necessity for feeling fulfilled. And we all know the fleeting sensation of its absence: the lack of motivation, the nihilistic fears of pointlessness welling up, wondering if you’ll ever again have anything worthwhile to do or say. Sometimes it hits you on your ass and wakes you up, but most of the time, for most of us, inspiration comes from experience.

And too often do we forget that Los Angeles is the city of dreams; a city whose character is defined by ambition, the hopes and aspirations of its citizens, and a driving mentality to make the most of our lives. Over time, that vigor has shaped the makeup of Los Angeles, so it comes as no surprise that there are so many things to do in LA that will invoke your inspirations.

Large or small, whether it’s to realize some potential desire to do something new with your life, to contribute your own piece of yourself to the world, or simply revitalize your spirit, here are some of the best places in the city to invigorate your body and your soul.

Best Place to Get Inspired to Quit your Day Job and Travel the World: Malibu

Whether you’re watching a flawless wave peel across Surf Rider Beach, or hiking in the mountains above it, the tranquil laid-back vibes of Malibu will make you forget you still live in Los Angeles. You’ll be tempted to throw your ties in the trash, and trade in your office-view for a window-seat en route to the ancient temples of Angkor Wat or the old-world relaxation of sitting at a bustling café in a Florentine plaza while catching up on your reading list.

Best Place to Get Inspired to Play: The Sunset Strip

As we get older, many of us are caught in the grind of working long hours and ignoring our friend’s phone calls in lieu of a quiet night on the couch. The routine and comfort make us forget about the joys of a night on the town, not knowing what is in store. But whether you are into live music venues, the posh club scene, or a laidback and quirky bar, the Sunset Strip has it all. One visit and the sights of
so many young partygoers having the time of their life will get that wild side of you squirming to break out.

Best Place to Get Inspired to Create: Saturdays off the 405 at the Getty Museum

This monthly concert series over the summer is held at the world-famous Getty Museum. The grounds are perched on a hillside in the Santa Monica Mountains, so if the stunning views of the sunset over the Los Angeles Basin doesn’t get your juices going, then the world-class artwork, sculptures, and paintings of the museum coupled with the up-and-coming bands on stage will. The one-of-a-kind density of
art, music, and culture here will have you thinking of all the ways you can add some creativity to your life.

Best Place to Get Inspired to Get in Shape: Runyon Canyon

Runyon Canyon is a popular hiking spot and park in the Hollywood Hills that offers great climbs and beautiful views of the city. But that’s not the only kind of view that the park offers. The trails are a favorite exercise ground to stunning models, stylish fashionettas, and chiseled actors. So by the time you finish hiking passed so many gorgeous and fit people and your body remembers how good it feels to move around, you’ll be eager get back into summer shape.

Best Place to Get Inspired to Learn Something New: Venice Boardwalk

The famed Venice Boardwalk is a bustling mile-long stretch of bizarre characters and eclectic activity that is booming on any sunny day of the year. You’ll encounter vintage shops, art displays, street vendors, performers, skaters, surfers, musicians, drum-circles, and everything your imagination can conjure. The overload of so many types of people showing off all sorts of crafts will make you realize you don’t need to be a professional to enjoy a passion, so pick up a guitar or a paint brush or sign up for surf lessons and learn something new!

Eating Like the Locals

on Tuesday, 05 March 2013. Posted in Austin, Nashville

Feast BBQ style while exploring the southern states

Exploring the southern states? Here’s how to feast BBQ style and experience some of the south’s most famous flavors.

Nashville, TN

In Nashville, Tennessee, get a mouthful of slow-smoked ribs, often served ‘dry’ or ‘wet’. Dry ribs are brushed with spices before cooking and eating without sauce. Wet ribs are doused in sauce before, throughout and after the cooking process, for a juicier BBQ experience. In Nashville, sauces tend to be more piquant than elsewhere, the sauce being enriched with flavorings such as vinegar, mustard, soy and even whiskey.

Kansas City, KA

Kansas City BBQ is unique in its range. You’ll find beef, pork, chicken, mutton, turkey and fish, slow smoked over a selection of different woods. The signature ingredient is the sauce: a heady blend of tomato and molasses, it’s sweeter than your average BBQ condiment and forms the perfect accompaniment to the deep smokey flavor of the meat.

And when you’ve had your fill of some of the south’s best sauce-drenched meat, you may want to check into a Kansas City hotel to sit back and relax while you work off your food coma.

And if you’re really taken with Kansas City BBQ, you might want to check out The Great Lenexa BBQ Battle, that takes place in northeast Kansas State.

Austin, TX

While the Big Ls - Lockhart, Luling, Llano and Lexington - have formerly taken the spotlight on the Texan BBQ scene, Austin is now stealing the show, with a number of well-loved (and well-reviewed) restaurants claiming media attention and making themselves known. Central Texan BBQ is all about the meat.

You’ll find little discussion of sauces and accompanying dishes, the focus is all on the quality of the pork ribs, pork loin, beef shoulder, turkey breast and chicken. BBQ sandwiches are rarer than in other traditions; sauces are mild and served only as a (frequently neglected) dip.

Fun Things for Spring in Chicago

on Friday, 22 February 2013. Posted in Chicago

A Few Activities to Make the Most of Chicago's Warm Weather

Spring in Chicago is an especially exciting time of year. For a city that has endured many cold, snowy months of winter, spring is a refreshing change. Chicago is a great place for experiencing the warmer weather due to its mix of city life and natural beauty.

Situated right on Lake Michigan, Chicago not only has all the urban features of a major U.S. city, but beaches, running trails, and activities that can be enjoyed outdoors. Here are a few things to do in Chicago that really capture the essence of spring!

Opening Day at Wrigley Field

Chicagoans love their sports and are especially fond of baseball games at Wrigley Field. Although they don’t win most games, the Cubs are loved by Chicago, and games in the ballpark are always packed with proud spectators. Opening day at Wrigley is an exciting start to the season and signals that spring has arrived. You’ll feel the energy of the crowd, who is looking forward to the game and the many months of warm weather to come.

Stroll Down the Magnificent Mile

A classic Chicago destination, this 13-block stretch of Michigan Avenue is one of the world’s top sites for shopping, dining, and entertainment. Always look for "shopping discounts" before you hit the stores.

With beautiful architecture flanking both sides of the street, the Mag Mile is not only a place for designer shopping but for seeing the historic buildings of Chicago. With flowers in bloom and lots of sun, a stroll down the Mag Mile is a perfect way to enjoy the spring weather.

Chicago Architecture River Cruise

Chicago is known for its stunning architecture, and there is no better way to learn about it than by seeing it first-hand. Try one of Chicago’s architectural boat tours like the Chicago Architecture Foundation River Cruise, which starts up in April. This trip down the Chicago River is not only fun and family-friendly, but your tour guide will teach you about the historic buildings flanking the river as you pass by.

North Avenue Beach

One of Chicago’s most popular beaches, North Avenue Beach offers dining, watersports, yoga, and other outdoor activities to accommodate a wide range of interests. The beach house, a permanent feature of the beach, provides beautiful views of the city, and is great for watching runners and bikers along the lakefront trail. Open to all in late May, it is considered by many to be the premier beach of Chicago.

The Lincoln Park Zoo

For a family-friendly option, visit the Lincoln Park Zoo. It’s free and open every day of the year. Located in the neighborhood of Lincoln Park just north of the city, the zoo is an escape from the bustle of Chicago where you can enjoy the animal life and weather at the same time. Make the most of Chicago’s warm weather while it lasts with these outdoor activities!

Looking for a Unique Vacation? Try One of These Underrated Cities

on Thursday, 07 February 2013. Posted in Moving and Travel

Kansas City by Clay SwatzellKansas City by Clay Swatzell

So you’ve been to New York, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Orlando and all the other most popular vacation spots in the United States.

Where on earth should you go next? When deciding on your next travel destination, why not give some thought to these unfairly underrated cities?

Fort Lauderdale, Florida

“Oh, sure,” you’re probably thinking. “I’d love to go to Fort Lauderdale…if I were a drunk collegiate on spring break.”

Don’t be so quick to judge. Fort Lauderdale has undergone quite an
overhaul of its party-town reputation. It’s now a respectable upscale resort complete with fancy hotels, miles of unspoiled beach property and high-end shopping and dining.

Kansas City, Missouri and Kansas

Sprawling across both sides of the Kansas/Missouri state line, Kansas City has something to please every traveler. It boasts more fountains than any city except for Rome. It’s one of the barbecue capitals of the world.

Theater and symphony fans won’t be able to get enough of the new Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts. And history buffs can spend hours touring the Negro League Baseball Museum, the Arabia Steamboat Museum, and the National World War I Museum.

Portland, Oregon

Many people view Portland as a starting-off point to other vacation spots such as the Oregon Coast, the wineries of Willamette Valley or Mt. Hood.

If you’re a fan of the arts or of micro-brewed beers, however, Portland can be a destination in and of itself. With 70 breweries in the metro area, beer drinkers are bound to find a number of new favorites.

Louisville, Kentucky

It does draw huge crowds for the Kentucky Derby, but Louisville has so much more to offer than a famous horse race. When you visit, you’ll find an intriguing combination of Southern hospitality, small-town charm, and modern art and dining.

If you’re traveling with baseball fans, they won’t want to miss the Louisville Slugger Museum, and everyone in the party is bound to enjoy a relaxing Ohio River cruise on the Belle of Louisville. If you want one, you can even have an authentic mint julep.

Providence, Rhode Island

Providence is often overlooked because it is less than an hour away from Boston. Nevertheless, the powers that be in the city have put a great deal of work into renewing and reviving Providence. When you visit here, you can enjoy shopping, gondola rides, a vast art collection at the Chace Center at the Museum of Art-Rhode Island School of Design, performance art on the streets, and WaterFire events featuring bonfires and sculptures choreographed to music.

Whether your job is to rent construction equipment or work as a bank president, it’s always fun to find a new vacation spot to explore. Hopefully you’ll enjoy the cities listed above so much they’ll become old favorites.

Moving to the Big City

on Thursday, 07 February 2013. Posted in Moving and Travel, Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles

Making the transition from small town to big city!

The Big CityThe Big City

When I was growing up in a small, rural Oregon town, the big city was Portland. Since moving there as a teen, I’ve also lived in London, Seoul, and San Jose, Costa Rica.

One trend remains true around the world: big cities are spilling over with former small towners. However, it can still be a shock when you move from Podunk to Boston. One of the biggest shocks is price tag shock. Things just cost more, whether you’re talking about designer entertainment centers from the local boutique furniture store or movie tickets.

Of course, there’s also the chance to make more money. Unfortunately, a higher salary is not necessarily a guarantee.

What to Keep

The openness and friendliness you may have fostered in a smaller town can quickly get drained when moving to an urban area. That’s one thing you should cling to no matter what. This doesn’t mean to become (or stay) naive, but it does mean that you should incorporate some of that small town charm into your life. It’s genuine and will make you stand out.

When you first move, you should also keep as much of your old stuff as possible. Unless you have a lucrative dream job already lined up, you’re going to need as much help as you can get. Your apartment in Austin might be smaller, but it still needs to be furnished. Don’t get caught up in the idea of starting fresh.

What to Ditch

Most urban areas have fantastic public transportation, such as the L-Train in Chicago. If you’re going to move to a city, actually move there. Live downtown or in a trendy neighborhood at least once for the experience. Don’t almost do it, and settle for a house similar to your old one in the suburbs.

Get rid of the car and walk, bike or bus it where you need to go. There are a few exceptions to this rule, such as Los Angeles. Many people think that everyone in LA needs a car (and if you’ve visited there, you probably agree). You should also let go of any expectations. You can’t possibly fathom what it’s going to be like to really live somewhere, even if you have visited.

Sidestep the Traps

Some New Yorkers live in the city for decades and almost never go beyond a ten-block radius. Truly explore your new city and try to go to a different restaurant, bar, exhibit or event as much as possible. Don’t fall in love with the first cafe you see. Otherwise, you’re just making a small town within your new city.

Check out the guide books and play tourist. That’s exactly what you are for the first few years you live somewhere. Make friends by any means possible, whether it’s through a dance class or a meetup group. Remember that you might only have one chance to fall head over heels in love with a new urban environment, so give it all you’ve got.

Home Sales in Major Markets Improving; Median Prices Increasing

on Monday, 28 January 2013. Posted in Moving and Travel, Austin, Chicago, Denver, Miami, Nashville

Major metro areas are finally seeing an upswing in local housing markets, according to recent data released in these regions. Median list prices are also trending upward in these large U.S. cities, despite lower total inventory, supporting reports that the nationwide market is on the mend.

Austin

Home sales in Austin, Texas, jumped by 23 percent from November 2011 to November 2012, according to the Austin Board of Realtors. November 2012 was also the 18th straight month of sales volume increases.

“The typical lull of the Thanksgiving holiday did not slow down the Austin real estate market,” said ABoR Former Chairman Leonard Guerrero. “This is the strongest November housing market we’ve seen since the recession.”

The median price in the Austin area also increased by 7 percent to $200,000 from November 2011 to November 2012. In addition, the market is tightening with just 1.5 months of supply of inventory in November 2011; a year prior there was 3 months of supply of inventory.

The market also featured 8 percent more new listings, 20 percent fewer active listings, and 19 percent more pending sales in November 2012 compared to the prior year. On average, homes
spent 67 days on the market, which is a decrease of 16 days from one year prior.

Chicago

Chicago (the nine-county Chicago area) saw a 36.2 percent increase in existing single-family home and condominium sales from November 2011 to November 2012, according to the Illinois Association of Realtors.

The median price increased from $149,900 to $155,000 during that same period, the IAR reported.

“All of the measurements we are seeing in this report point to a housing market that is not losing strength,” said Michael D. Oldenettel, President of the Illinois Association of REALTORS. “In
fact, we have seen a respectable momentum in a part of the year when the real estate business tends to slow down for the holidays.”

Nashville

Nashville, Tennessee, also experienced a healthy increase in existing home sales, jumping 21 percent from 1,773 closings in December 2011 to 2,147 closings in December 2012, according to the Greater Nashville Association of Realtors.

“All nine counties in our primary service area experienced significant increases in home sales, with many of them exceeding 20 percent for the year,” said GNAR President Price Lechleiter.

“And, modest increases in residential median prices were a clear trend throughout the region.”

Miami

The MIAMI Association of Realtors reports that the housing market there will set another record for 2012, exceeding sales levels at the height of the boom in 2005 and during the all-time record in 2011.

Miami home prices have increased each of the last 12 months, the association reported. The REALTORS attribute the increase to strong demand and very tight supply.

Miami-Dade County residential sales went up 23 percent in November year over year. Sales of existing condominiums in Miami-Dade increased 19.8 percent, from 1,139 to 1,365, while sales of single-family homes increased 26.2 percent, from 802 to 1,012.

Denver

The Denver Business Journal reports that the sale of single-family homes continues to improve year after year, the average sales price is rising, and the amount of time a house is on the market has dropped by more than a month.

The December report from Metrolist Inc. shows there were 3,400 homes sold that month, an 8 percent drop from the number sold in November. Yet that’s an 8 percent increase from the number sold in December of 2011, the Business Journal reported.

Turns out Bostonians Know How to Dance

on Friday, 25 January 2013. Posted in Boston

When it comes to nightlife, Boston might be the rugged bastard step-brother of its chic island brethren to the Southwest, but that doesn’t mean you have to go all the way to New York City to find more than a rowdy bar or pub.

Turns out there are Boston locales where you won’t get punched in the face for wearing something other than a green or red jersey. Places where the bartender won’t give you a dirty look for ordering a martini instead of the house ale special. And of course, places whose idea of a DJ goes beyond being able to play Journey’s Greatest Hits on repeat.

So if you’re feeling like dressing up, moving to some trendy music, and surrounding yourself with beautiful people looking to flirt and dance, here are four of the best clubs in Boston for getting crazy in style.

Wonder Bar

So you want wild dance scenes, attractive denizens dressed to impress, and a whole lot of rowdy drinking, but don’t want to worry about getting passed the velvet ropes? Then head over to Wonder Bar in the Allston district of Boston.

Come early on the weekend to skip the cover and the line – the downstairs lounge is a chill place to start the night with a few drinks while the crowd fills in. By club standards, the drinks are cheap and the beer is cheaper. When that liquid courage is running strong, head upstairs to the dance floor of grinding bodies, boozing crowds, the occasional girl dancing on a table, and join in on the decadence.

The Estate

With its ultra-swanky décor, huge dance space, sexy fashionistas in short dresses and high heels, and well-to-do young professionals looking their best, The Estate sets the standard for Boston clubs. You could easily transplant it into New York City, Las Vegas, or Hollywood, and it would fit right in.

The Estate is the place for the hard-partyer looking to substitute Boston’s usual raucous sports bar scene with some glamour – and of course the eye candy.

Splash Ultra Lounge

Splash Ultra Lounge is where preppy professionals and upscale debutantes tired of looking at flannels and Red Sox caps head to get rowdy. When it comes to attire, the sky is the limit at this Leather District club.

The clean white walls, leather furnishings, marble bar, and floor-to-ceiling windows covered in white blinds make patrons feel like they are partying in the living room of a millionaire’s penthouse. During the summer, the rooftop becomes the real attraction.

On warm nights, the lavish cabanas surrounding the fountains and wading pool make for a pleasant escape from the heat and music to mingle with somedrunken socialites. Splash Ultra lounge is the perfect place for those looking to party with both Dolce and Gabbana.

Underbar

When the icy streets and frozen urban tundra has you feeling lonely, there’s nothing better than stepping into the welcoming atmosphereof the beach themed Underbar.

The seashell-lined pillars and ocean décor may be kitshy, but nobody in Underbar ever seems to mind. It’s easy to get distracted by the trendy and attractive club kids, the modern sound system, and the main room that fits in over four hundred partiers.

There’s not exactly a designated dance floor, so the drunken masses spill out onto the walkways and anywhere there is space, making it that much easier to mingle and flirt your way to the bar. So ditch your North Face and step into Underbar for your own little bit of paradise.
