Scorpio Rising is what would happen if My Life With The Thrill Kill Kult ever became infused with disco, and that's exactly what we love that about them! Combining great vocals by Madame Scorpio, with instrumentation that's impossible to ignore, this electro/disco group produces songs that will make even the most exhausted workaholic feel like dancing.
Long term Austin residents, Scorpio Rising talks about the music and what rocks (and what doesn't) about Austin.
What are the members' names and where are you all from originally?
Madame Scorpio: I grew up in Austin having moved from Missouri to Texas at age of four.
Wonderbred: I grew up in Austin. I moved from Nebraska to Texas at age 4 as well.
DJ Bixler: I grew up in Alpine, Texas, moved to Austin after high school.
How long have you been performing together?
This incarnation has been performing together for 5 years. Scorpio Rising started in the mid-1990s as a side project of Austin funk outfit Retarted Elf’s vocalist/dancer, Madame Scorpio and guitarist, Wonderbred.
Who are you influenced by?
KISS, ABBA, NWA, Luscious Jackson, Judas Priest, Michael Jackson, Slayer, ELO, Lita Ford, Pretenders, Beastie Boys, The Cars, Peaches and Herb, Madonna, Christina Aguilera, Eazy-E.
What’s the secret to balancing your music with other obligations? (i.e.: job, significant other, children, etc)
No sleep at all!
How would you describe your performances to someone who has never seen one?
We like to entertain, no shoe gazing, that is for sure. Come rock our energy, you’ll understand and know.
If you had to describe your music in under 5 words, how would you do that?
Get the hell up music!
Do you remember the song you first mastered? What was it?
What distinguishes your group as "artists" instead of just musicians?
We create everything from writing/composing songs, artwork, great showmanship, print/design our own shirts, design and build our own midi light system, bring the show in full.
What are your favorite and least favorite aspects of Austin?
Austin used to be a cool small college town, and it is still has a little of the "onward through the fog" feel from back in the day. We're not a fan of the wanna-be-trendy growth of people moving here and trying to be hardcore cool. Growth is cool, but not when they take away from what is really cool about a place. We hate the shitty traffic, too! (That was a lot of "cools"!)
What's one place everybody needs to eat at least once?
There are lots of places. Madame Scorpio is a vegetarian; Wonderbred and Bix are carnivorous.
Madame Scorpio: Mr. Naturals or Serranos
Wonderbred: Pho Thaison Vietnamese Cuisine
Bixler: Taco Cabana - nachos with lettuce and tomatoes.
